You can walk into a building, set a fishing pole, crack open a beer, relax while catching shrimp, bake then eat them on the spot… Shrimping in Taiwan.

Many go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.

Also known as “shrimping“, I discovered this oddly unique activity by accident when we walked into what I thought was a shrimp restaurant in the heart of Taipei. I almost made a u-turn to leave because my brain took longer than usual to process what my eyes were seeing as it was something I’ve never seen or even thought of.

People were literally fishing inside this building inside of a busy street inside of a dense urban city. It didn’t make sense but it was fascinating and we had to try.

So to reiterate, this was a business where you can actually go fishing for huge live shrimp while indoors.

In these shrimping joints, there’s a huge pool in the center with all sorts of kinds of people lined on the sides. Fishing like it’s the most natural thing in the world.

The patrons varied greatly from people just off work, older citizens, teenagers and even couples on a date. The point is, the Taiwan locals have made shrimping more than a recreation but a national past time.

Now it makes sense. This concept of fishing for shrimp indoors combines the best part of fishing which is hanging out with yourself or your friends while on a relaxing hunt with the convenience of location. Nothing beats fishing on a beautiful lake or in the deep ocean but sometimes you just don’t want to go out that far.

In many ways shrimping is much like a restaurant where you have to catch and bake your own food. So like a restaurant you get the comfort of your own space to eat, drink, socialize or just kill time while you fish.

Pricing is usually by the hour or by the bait but both methods average about 2 – 3 hours for $8 – $10 USD. For this you get a fishing rod and a bowl of dry bait.

Whenever you catch a shrimp, you place it in the in-water net. After your time is up or bait is out, you have the choice of packing it to go or baking the shrimp in their oven and eating them right then and there. You can even bake them yourself or have staff do it for you.

Instant gratification for your spoils.

I’ve gone a half a dozen times averaging 8 shrimp per 3 hour sessions but my friend would get 12 and some of the experienced Taipei locals even more.

So while it may seem like there’s no sport in fishing for shrimp in a pool of water indoors, there is skill involved. But more than that, its not just about the art of fishing but the art of having a good time.

Besides, the Taiwan grown shrimp are huge and taste damn good. Add to that, you can eat them minutes after you catch them, no food could be fresher.
